What's the best practical joke you've pulled or had pulled on you?
Submitted by Mike Schwartz.
This is complete proof that my family is a bunch of smart asses. For 6 months, my brother knew I wanted the iPhone and demanded he work the launch so he could sell it to me. I didn't want to deal with a salesman who was going to try to upsell me a bunch of stuff. I just wanted to come in, buy my phone, and leave. Who better to do that than my brother?
So I wait outside of the AT&T store for 8 hours on the iFriday. I get inside, Cody grabs my phone and tells me the price. I hand him my Visa and he runs the charge.
He looks up at me slowly: "Your card was declined."
My heart jumped out of my throat and I let out a massive gasp. He then started pointing and laughing at me.
"Got ya!"
I've been at this digital photography thing for about a week and have been having a lot of fun. The first assignment I had with the camera as you will remember was to snap some photos of my brother's softball game. I only had my kit lens at the time, so I couldn't get anything of great distance, but I was pretty pleased with what turned out just using the preset options.
What amazed me the most about the experience was how quickly I could capture each shot. I am so used to the shoot-wait-repeat of my point and shoots that I never knew that this could be so quick.
Besides the softball game, I have been trying to snap photos of things indoors. The main problem with that is the lighting and getting correct color out of a shot. I can repair things in Photoshop or iPhoto, but I know that some of it isn't necessary. Partially it can be blamed on the awful yellowish lights in our house. Of my indoor shots, the iPod nano collection I snapped saw a lot of hits (25,000 almost) on Flickr thanks to some linking on Engadget and Flickr.
Just yesterday the second lens I ordered arrived. I grabbed a 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM off of eBay because I wanted to get closer with shots than the kit lens would allow. I got a sweet deal on it, so it kept my entire kit around $1200. I took the lens to the Evansville Otters game last night. The Otters are our local minor league baseball team (Frontier League) and they are playing in the championship series. I figured the lens wouldn't turn out well because the aperture wasn't big enough, and my assumptions were correct. Most actions shots I snapped were blurred. I still was able to get a few good ones of people on the field, but most of what I shot was sent to the trash.
I am starting to realize that I am going to need to get a f2.8 or below lens for any sort of night/indoor sports like my sisters cheer competitions or football games. There is a company called RentGlass.com that rents lenses that I may use for events like that. I can't really stomach spending $1500 on a lens at this point since this is a hobby and I am a complete amateur. Maybe in a year or two if/when I get better at this stuff.
I also want to start weening myself off of the automatic modes on my XT and start using the more customizable modes more often.
